What has changed in the last 50 years? No, this isn't fear-mongering—that has existed since BC. What has actually changed is that individualism is far more pronounced today than it was half a century ago. Back then, people acknowledged that everyone was individually diverse, legitimate, and a unique piece of a bigger puzzle. Having a different opinion was okay. Yes, there were outcasts, contrary views, and instances of violence, but foundational values were still in place. Families shared dinners, watched the news, and spent TV time together.
Today, nobody seems to care. The internet has conquered society. A 25-second online snippet holds so much importance that you might literally forget to take care of your basic physical needs. These digital snippets are completely overshadowing the verbal expression of real human desires.
Just look back at the commune movement (70's), where people came together as a team to seed, harvest, and feed one another. Today, nobody wants to grow their own food because it might dislodge them from their sole purpose: chasing hits and likes. Family dinners are no longer shared as a family. Instead, kids sit isolated in their rooms, souring over their desires without any vision of what truly matters within a society while searching for it on the phone. Phones in the past was to communicate in verbal manner. Kids will argue that they Snap, TikTok but actually acknowledging what happens in their immediate surrounding is muted. In addition anything ignoring the immediate surrounding can be declared a mental illness or a distinct difference, yet nobody tries to integrate.
In the past, we took to the streets to protest inequality. We were not shy about expressing ourselves. Today, the majority is just screaming "ME, ME, ME!" Only a few are focused on "WE." Honest discussions of values backed by proven facts are gone. News outlets comment on potential stories without doing any real fact-checking. Why? Because algorithms use mathematical means to define exactly what to push into the now-numbed brains of individuals.
What value does an opinion on a lipstick color bring to society compared to the fact that violence and inequality are getting worse by the day? Nobody cares!
Everyone want to live in harmony, prosperity. Unfortunately we have lost a lot of sympathy, capability to listen and live together.
I personally miss family dinners, a Sunday breakfast and the talks, games that happen simultaneously. I dislike that my T-shirts, Briefs, Socks are vanishing just because the phone was to important to have their own laundry put thru the process. IOr even acknowledge that the last piece of toilet paper was taken by you and will put the next into a pickle.I hate the ignorance that all the individual asks are put into my task without the attempt to try figure out what they could do to achieve the similar.
I had to wake up a 4AM, clean and then head to the bus with a 15min walk to be punctual at work. The other option was to take a stupid bicycle which saved 30 minutes in the morning but a lot of sweat and stink to the community and had to be repeated after the shift when the temps were much hotter.
